PROJECT SUMMARY
Working with Bradford Energy Network to install the most cost effective, low-to-zero carbon heating solution, and lay the ground work that will enable the city to fulfil its ambition to be the UK’s leading Clean Growth City.
85-90%
Reduction in building emissions
£20m
Green Heat Network Funding
8,000 tonnes
Carbon reduction pa, from phase one alone
CHALLENGES
Stakeholder management
High volume of works within the city and the importance of keeping traffic and public disruption to a minimum made the management of key stakeholders central to the success of the project.
Tight timescales
All city centre works had to be completed prior to the council’s Transformation City Fund works. Meaning ThermaMech had to deliver the project to the highest standards with an immovable timescale.
Managing a congested site
The site was heavily congested with existing services, necessitating complex management to enable us to install a high standard Quality system of series 3 pre insulated steel network.
Minimising disruption to community
ThermaMech used vacuum excavation methods to excavate around sensitive and high risk services that feed city, and key buildings such as magistrates courts, ensuring the heat network was installed to the highest standards, with the lowest risk of disruption to supply,
SUCCESS STORY
Transformatively sustainable
A reduction in emissions by approximately 8,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per year in phase one alone. And an 85-90% reduction in emissions related to buildings on the district heating network, leading to large improvement in local air quality and potential improvement of health in the city.
Landmark district energy project
The BEN will be the UK’s largest Air Source Heat Pump district energy project, using 7.5MW of ASHP to deliver renewable heat, and remove 25MW of gas boilers in the city centre in Phase 1 alone.
Brand equity for Bradford
Bradford ‘s iconic buildings that were used for the City of Culture celebrations could be supplied by Low-to-Zero carbon heat.
Added local value
Apprenticeships and jobs are intended to be created in the supply-chain during the construction and operations phases, delivering new skills into Bradford. Significant private-sector investment into Bradford’s Net Zero Infrastructure demonstrating Bradford’s credentials as the country’s leading clean growth district.
